DESIGN IT

designIT is a software tool for all building practitioners for the design of Carter Holt Harvey’s Engineered Wood Products range and other selected materials for houses and similar structures. Quick and simple to use yet deceptively powerful software, designIT is useful for the selection of beam sizes without the need for engineering knowledge or the exercise of professional engineering judgement.

The following system requirements have been identified for the use of designIT Series 4. Whilst designIT may be installed on other, older operating systems we can not guarantee outputs.

• PC with a Pentium II, minimum 233 MHz processor
• 32 bit or 64 bit operating systems: MS Windows XP, MS Vista
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.01 or later
• 64 MB of memory
• 40 MB of available hard disk space
• Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution display, with 256 (or more) colours
• Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
• Internet connectivity for updates

• Tie-down reactions* are now provided for the following members:
  • Rafters, including re-calculation for overhang where required
  • Lintels in single or upper storey load bearing walls
  • Lintels supporting strutting beams
  • Lintels supporting girder truss/truncated girder truss
  *This functionality is only available through design using the ‘ratios’ functionality
• The Design Certificate viewer has been upgraded to include:
  • Enhanced page viewing controls
  • The ability to use the mouse wheel to scroll through all documents
  • The ability to create a PDF file of the document
  • Include referenced details as part of the Design Certificate
• Users can now double-click on a “DIT” file that will automatically open designIT with that Design Certificate

• Minor bug fixes relating to addition of new members to Design Certificates by some methods
• Stud height restrictions altered to reflect adjustments to AS 1684.
• The DesignIT series3 certificate viewer was failing on older certificates (NZ only - pre-snow)
• Vista users with the User Account Control turned on were getting an exception error when applying preferences. Error is still displayed, but it is better expressed.

New User Interface

The user interface now incorporates the “Office 2007 style ribbon bar” allowing users access to all general functionality whilst we have kept the same easy to follow input and output regions with diagrammatic guidance on each required input field. Design operations are now broken down into application groups, such as floor framing, wall framing and roof framing with useful links to associated products and literature within these groups.

New functionality

Some of the new functionality incorporated in to designIT Series 4 includes:

• Improved snow loading entry and operation (new to Australia)
• Inclusion of some tie down details from relevant Timber Structures Standards for solid section members
• Design to allow for notching of studs up to 125 mm deep
• Permanent load deflection always displayed in Serviceability Report (except studs and post members) for ease of comparison with like members
• New strutting beam modules, representing the roof area entry
