designIT is a software tool for all building practitioners for the design of Carter Holt Harvey’s Engineered Wood Products range and other selected materials for houses and similar structures. Quick and simple to use yet deceptively powerful software, designIT is useful for the selection of beam sizes without the need for engineering knowledge or the exercise of professional engineering judgement.
Features
Based upon AS 1684.1
Design criteria and updated to include for the AS/NZS 1170 - 2002 design requirements, now including AS/NZS 1170.3 Snow and ice actions, and for New Zealand, includes recommendations from DBH Practice Advisory 9
Includes options for design
With commonly available stress grades of timber and glue laminated timber (Glulam in Australia only).
Caters for a range of floor live loads
Needed for design of decks, balconies and residential apartment buildings (up to 3.0 kPa / 2.7 kN).
Includes a floor joist calculator
To allow consideration of actual load and support conditions for optimum design, web hole placement and specification of hangers.
Bearer calculator (similar to joist calculator)
Allowing for consideration of a wide range of load and support conditions including offset and parallel load bearing walls and support of concentrated loads to provide optimum solutions without the need for engineering design.
Serviceability report
Showing the estimated average deflection and the corresponding limit for the critical load case together with the permanent load deflection (where applicable).
Reference to specific details
Relating to hyJOIST used in roofs and floors..
v4.0.14 (Released 10 mAY, 2010)
Additional sizes for the hySPAN solutions range in the Australian version
system requirements
The following system requirements have been identified for the use of designIT Series 4. Whilst designIT may be installed on other, older operating systems we can not guarantee outputs.
PC with a Pentium II, minimum 233 MHz processor
32 bit or 64 bit operating systems: MS Windows XP, MS Vista
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.01 or later
64 MB of memory
40 MB of available hard disk space
Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution display, with 256 (or more) colours
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Internet connectivity for updates
Version 4.0.14
Addition of the hySPAN Project sizes: 90 x 35, 90 x 45, 240 x 35 & 240 x 45 for Australian users
Version 4.0.11, 12, 13
Minor updates
Version 4.0.9, 10
Design option now includes the hySPAN Project range for Australian users
Version 4.0.8
Additional bracket sizes.
Minor Updates.
Version 4.0.6
Alterations completed in this version include:
• Introduction of State based selection in Australia. Selection of state will drive material and section availabilities as well as restricting to wind and snow availabilities to suit the selected State
• Revision of available brackets to suit hyJOIST and our LVL range
• A search facility is now available to aid users in locating Design Certificates
Version 4.0.5
Minor Updates.
Version 4.0.3
Improvement to alerting users when entering loading parameters in the joist and bearer calculators outside the intended scope of designIT (and NZS3604 and AS1684)
Tie-down reactions* are now provided for the following members:
• Rafters, including re-calculation for overhang where required
• Lintels in single or upper storey load bearing walls
• Lintels supporting strutting beams
• Lintels supporting girder truss/truncated girder truss
*This functionality is only available through design using the ‘ratios’ functionality
The Design Certificate viewer has been upgraded to include:
• Enhanced page viewing controls
• The ability to use the mouse wheel to scroll through all documents
• The ability to create a PDF file of the document
• Include referenced details as part of the Design Certificate
Users can now double-click on a “DIT” file that will automatically open designIT with that Design Certificate
Version 4.02
Minor bug fixes relating to addition of new members to Design Certificates by some methods
Stud height restrictions altered to reflect adjustments to AS 1684.
The DesignIT series3 certificate viewer was failing on older certificates (NZ only - pre-snow)
Vista users with the User Account Control turned on were getting an exception error when applying preferences. Error is still displayed, but it is better expressed.
Version 4.0.1
Minor bug fixes relating to addition of new members to Design Certificates by some methods.
Version 4.0.0
New User Interface
The user interface now incorporates the “Office 2007 style ribbon bar” allowing users access to all general functionality whilst we have kept the same easy to follow input and output regions with diagrammatic guidance on each required input field. Design operations are now broken down into application groups, such as floor framing, wall framing and roof framing with useful links to associated products and literature within these groups.
New functionality
Some of the new functionality incorporated in to designIT Series 4 includes:
Improved snow loading entry and operation (new to Australia)
Inclusion of some tie down details from relevant Timber Structures Standards for solid section members
Design to allow for notching of studs up to 125 mm deep
Permanent load deflection always displayed in Serviceability Report (except studs and post members) for ease of comparison with like members
New strutting beam modules, representing the roof area entry
